Getting Around

The Island of Gozo measures 10 miles by 5 and it is easy enough to navigate around.  The Island is not flat and if you want to get the best out of it we recommend hiring a car, or for the fitter amongst you a bicycle.  For this who rather use public transport Gozo now has an extensive public bus service which serves much of the Island.  During the winter months Gozo is a great place to explore by foot and has some excellent rambling routes.

Transfers from airport to gozo - Car hire - public Transport

When you arrive in Malta the only current way you can get over to Gozo is by land transfer, this involves being picked up from Malta Airport and taken directly over to Gozo in your own chauffer driven car.  Some companies offer split transfers which involves being picked up at Malta Airport and taken to Cirkewwa Ferry Terminal in Malta and then picked up by a seperate company when you arrive on Gozo, this can be a cheaper option.

Victory Garage in Xaghra offer both Direct and Split Transfers at very reasonable prices, the service is extremely personable and a warm welcome to the Island of Gozo is guaranteed.  They offer friendly chauffeur driven services for small or large groups and individuals, twenty-four hours a day, seven-days a week all year round with their luxorious and air-conditioned Mercedes cars and mini-buses, Ford Transits mini-buses and mini-coaches. Thanks to Victory's professionally trained licensed drivers their services are second to none. With Victory Garage you experience traveling in safety, comfort and luxury.

Whether you enjoy exploring by foot, bike, car, boat, plane, or public transport, Gozo is one of the most accessible islands that you could visit. To get the best out of what Gozo has to offer we certainly advise hiring a car for the duration of your holiday.  Expect to pay around €20-€25 Euros per day depending on make and model of the car. We recommend Mayjo (Tel: +356 21556678, www.mayjocarhire.com) and Gozo Garage (Tel: +356 21551866, www.gozogarage.com)

One of the most exciting ways to see the Island is via the bus service that operates from the bus terminus in Victoria; a new service was introduced last year that covers the island extensively.  Although the famous old buses have now been replaced the new bus system is a lot more dependable and is more frequent than the previous service.   There are several types of prepaid tickets available to purchase. A standard one day ticket costs €2.60, a standard two hour ticket costs €2.20 and a standard seven-day ticket costs €12. The prepaid tickets are purchased before boarding the bus from the various outlets who are authorised to sell them including lotto ticket boots, Malta Post outlets and other authorised shops. Please see www.arriva.com.mt for more details.

The Ferry service from Mgarr Harbour operated between Gozo and Malta by the Gozo Channel Company is the lifeblood for citizens on the island. There are many Gozitans who commute daily over to Malta for work but also to attend school and university. There are frequent ferry services between Gozo and Malta and the service operates 24/7.  During the daytime the ferry operates roughly every 45 min between 06.00am and 21.00pm.  Between 23.00pm and 05.00am the ferry operates roughly every 90 min.  Ferry tickets for foot passengers costs €4.65 and for a car and driver the cost is €15.70 return.  Please note that tickets are purchased at Cirkewwa, the Maltese side.  See www.gozochannel.com for further details.
